We are deep into Fall Migration of birds. This is the time of year when you are most likely to see the greatest number of species in your yard. SO LOOK OUT ! Some of the birds you might see that are just passing through are; the Rose-breasted grosbeak, White-breasted Nuthatch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Prairie Warbler, American Redstart and others.
October is a grand time to be out in the field birding. Another very interesting activity is watching for birds migrating at night. A few days before and after the full moon this month, get out those binoculars and take a look at the full moon. If you continue to watch it is not uncommon to see birds flying between you and the moon. Many birds migrate only at night using the daylight hours to feed and replenish energy reserves.
Humming birds will be leaving soon also. When do you take your humming bird feeders in? NOT UNTIL YOU HAVEN’T SEEN A HUMMER FOR AT LEAST THIRTY DAYS. We don’t have to tell
them when to leave anymore than we have to draw them a map telling where to go. Leave the feeders out until at least thirty days past your last sighting.
Enjoy the fall. It is one of the most exciting times for bird migration.
