This a wonderful time of year. The hot sweltering days are behind us, and the cool fall and winter days are here offering the outdoor gardener a brisk breath of fresh air. Oh yes, we will have some cold days, but “if you don’t like the weather one day, you’ll like it the next day. That’s South Carolina weather.”
The days of longer nights and shorter days, give us a time of reflection and a time of planning. The time of reflection helps us to remember the things we did, and how we could have done them better. What is in the past is in the past, and there is no way to change that. However, we can help ameliorate the problems of the past by better planning which leads to success.
A few years along ago, a former student, Gene Bradley, taking the Lawn Care course for the second time a few years later, made a comment during a class break that I will always remember. Gene stated that there were 3 reasons for taking the class for the second time. The first reason was you always learn something new, the second reason was that you associate with people of the same mind-set and the third reason is that it is more economical to attend a night class than to go to a movie on an hourly basis. At current prices, a movie ticket and a small tub of popcorn is over $ 20.18 including sales tax. Let’s say the movie last 2 hours, therefore, the costs for entertainment and no instruction is 10.09. Today’s price for 1 hour of instruction in the Landscape and Horticulture Program is $ 7.04. You do the math, which is more economical.
