Always take time to smell the roses and have a Happy Valentine Day!

February is the month most long stemed roses are bought. The flower shops stock up and sell red roses by 100,000 of dozens. Rose patterns are not just found on rose bushes. Each stalk of celery has its own rose pattern. They are like fingerprints in that they have variations in the patterns. Slice straight across the bottom and look at the rose. It can be used to make a beautiful Valentine card, gift bag or wraping paper.

Watercolor, tempera paint or food coloring can be used to stamp roses using the celery heart. Add only a small amount of water to keep an intense red or you’ll have beautiful pink roses. A small brush can be used to embelish the petals. Add green rose leaves presssed with plastic or silk leaves. When pruning roses the rule is to always prune above a five leafed stem.

Cold February days are excellent days to curl up with a book about  heirloom plants or to search for seeds on line. Order some heirloom tomato seeds and punch holes in the bottom of paper cups to plant them on February 14. My favorite is the pink, low acid German Johnsons. You will be making a gift that keeps on giving until frost. Be sure to save seeds to plant next year.
